UpdatedAug 29, 2011 6:25 AM ETPlastic bagsWhat's this business with the plastic bag industry's AmericanChemistry Council allowed to insert its propaganda into 11th gradeschool curricula to influence the kids that their product isecologically sound?Anything for a fast profit buck. Why plastic or paper at all?I've been shopping groceries with reusable cloth bags for decades.A couple of them are at least 25 years old.Harry SiitonenBerkeleyShould be felonyPeople like Gerald Lieberman have no business rewriting ormodifying textbooks to suit corporate interests unless they gothrough a formal open public process to get permission to do so.Lieberman should be removed for cause now, before he can damageanything else.He could as easily have inserted pro-Catholic material with thesame "I thought I was providing useful information" excuse.Whoever oversees such work as Lieberman did fell down on theirjob to vet his changes, and I want that agency warned to preventsuch manipulation in the future. If we believe that Cal-EPA allowed this, Cal-EPA needs to rootout and sack its corporate sycophants. It is absolutely unsuitable any longer to hear concessions madeto corporations to "correct public perception" -- and to seecorporations or corporate interest groups perverting oureducational materials to favor corporate points of view (withoutwarning the reader that they are reading propaganda). Such actionsshould be made a felony, period.Any time we hear that "group X" is overreaching itself, weshould boycott it -- so now's the time to quit polluting our planetwith more plastic bags: quit buying plastic to indicate how muchyou do not appreciate having our children reengineered by theAmerican Chemistry Council and its lackeys like Lieberman to bemindless consumers of polluting products.Eric DynamicOaklandCharacter of the RaidersThe San Francisco 49ers should have pulled the plug onexhibition games with the Oakland Raiders years ago.The recent display of unruly and aggressive fan behavior is thenorm at any football game in which the Raiders participant.Don't take my word as the truth: Just ask any Denver Broncos,Kansas City Chiefs or San Diego Chargers fan who has attended a Raiders home game about how theywere received.I agree that alcohol sales should be curtailed and tailgatinglimited to four hours before the game starts. These measures, alongwith police DUI checkpoints, should be in place at every NFL gameplayed in the U.S.But excessive alcohol consumption is only part of the problemwhen it comes to the Raiders fan base. This combativebehavior is, in fact, a mindset with them. The entire Raiders organization refers to theirfan base as some of the most passionate fans in all offootball. Here's a news flash, folks; this type of behavior is criminaland constitutes assault and battery. Bottom line; the San Francisco49ers will never negotiate a deal to share a stadium with theOakland Raiders.Donald L. CrottsSan LeandroDegenerated societyThe disgusting actions by the fans at the 49ers-Raiders game (don't forget theDodgers tragedy) is disgusting but not all that surprising, giventhe degenerate state of today's society. For decades, Raiders supporters have been proudof the moronic misfits inhabiting the Black Hole. (I don't know ifthe 49ers have the equal.) It's unacceptable; these people aresemi-human.Sports (hockey, basketball, football) on all levels, kids andadults, have catered to meanness and violence beyond the rules tostimulate interest, misrepresenting this as toughness. The onlytolerable standard is to demand play within the rules, withmeaningful consequences for violations. But this is not what America has become, whether it's sports, business, politics or personal conduct.David HornOaklandDerail projectHow many teachers, policemen and firefighters are we going tolay off each year to pay for the annual losses from high-speedrail?History shows that virtually all such systems are notself-supporting. We know now that all the assumptions of ridershipand revenues that the voters were fed before the last vote werephony. It is time to kill it!Colton MeyerWalnut Creek
